The Cost of Bad GIS Data Is Paid at Delivery

Bad GIS data is rarely discovered when it is created. It is discovered when somebody tries to publish it, integrate it, defend it—or reject it.

By then, the cheapest moment to fix the problem has already passed. Analysts are tracing the source of missing attributes, project managers are negotiating what “complete” was supposed to mean, and contractors are arguing that the delivery met a requirement nobody wrote down.

The real cost is not a geometry error

A topology error can often be corrected in minutes. The expensive part is everything around it:

  • the time spent finding who owns the correction;
  • the delay to dependent analysis, dashboards, models, and reports;
  • the inability to reject weak work on documented grounds;
  • the loss of confidence when different reviewers apply different standards; and
  • the risk of a decision being made from data nobody can properly defend.

Software can detect many defects. It cannot decide what your organisation considers acceptable. That requires a written quality gate.

Define “acceptable” before the file arrives

A useful GIS quality gate answers five questions before review begins:

  1. Is the dataset complete? Required layers, fields, records, metadata, and supporting files are present.
  2. Is it spatially valid? Geometry, topology, coordinate reference system, extents, and tolerances meet the specification.
  3. Is it internally consistent? Names, codes, domains, dates, units, and relationships follow one controlled structure.
  4. Is it fit for its intended use? Accuracy, resolution, currency, and lineage are appropriate for the decision or service it supports.
  5. Can the result be evidenced? The reviewer can record what passed, what failed, who checked it, and what happens next.

Without these questions, quality control becomes a debate between opinions. With them, acceptance becomes repeatable.
